REVIEW: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

I watched GotG Vol 2 last night and I didn't love it. Don't get me wrong, it was fun and it was great seeing all those characters interacting with each other. But I just didn't love it. At least not like I did with the first installment.

I'm not going into details about plot or the characters because, well, that's what IMDb is for. Instead, I'll just tell you about my experience watching this latest installment in the Marvel Studios universe.

Soon as the opening credits appeared, I was laughing and cheering along. In fact, that's how I was through at least the first 2/3 of the movie. However, it seemed like they took all my favorite things about the first installment, implanted these things into the body that was this sequel...and injected the body with steroids and adrenaline. So much in fact that it almost felt excessive and forced.

It was balls-to-the-wall humor. Every fifth line of dialogue was meant to be a punchline. It was punchline after punchline. The first installment was hilarious as well, but at least that one felt a bit more organic as far as humor.

Another thing that made the first one better is that it had the element of surprise. I can guarantee that 98% of moviegoers who saw it had never heard of these characters let alone knew how these characters behaved or interacted with each other. It was a delight.

Now that we're on the second one, we already knew these characters and already knew what to expect. But that takes me back to the "steroids and adrenaline" comment. They came off a bit to slapstick-ish.

As mentioned, I really enjoyed the first 2/3. It lost me a bit on that last third. It dragged and it landed a bit on the excessive side. I was like, "Did they really have to go that route?" and "I feel like I've seen this before in a lot of other movies."

Again, I didn't love this sequel. But I did have enough of good time watching it. Should you watch this in theaters? Yes. Of course. It's a great way to escape for 2 hours. And who knows. Maybe you'll actually end up loving it.
