The sequel to Pitch Black is very ambitious and almost feels so out of left field. These two movies feel totally different. Ditching the Horror and R rating, The Chronicles of Riddick delivers an epic Sci-fi action adventure that takes the convict/murderer Riddick and makes him a true anti hero. This movies set pieces look stunning and the world building in this movie is very ambitious. Its a pretty fun movie, not perfect by any means. There are pacing issues, and some story telling issues. But I admire the epic feel to it and thinking outside the box. They had a trilogy in mind so theres alpt of questions left unresolved and that was by design. If you saw Pitch Black no one would have predicted this would be the sequel. Its a shame that the movie was forced to a PG-13 rating but with 100 million budget the studio wouldn't have it any other way. I love how this got a huge budget but what was Universal thinking? They made a high budget sequel to a movie that no one really saw in the first place 5 years later. I know Vin Diesel was coming off of Fast and Furious and XXX but probably wasnt the best idea to sink all of this money into this project. I prefer to watch the unrated directors cut which in my opinion is the better version adding 15 extra minutes and giving better backstory than the theatrical release. It sucks we had to wait 9 years to get a sequel to this but at least we got one. This was a huge flop that gets alot of hate and i don't really understand it. Riddick is a cool character who fears nothing and can kill a man with his tea cup lol. If you're an fan of action and or sci this movie delivers. 7 out of 10
