  Upgrade is a fairly standard sci-fi action movie. It takes the well-worn premise that technology will eventually enslave us (see 2001: A Space Odyssey or The Terminator) and presents it in a different way. The film is interesting and engaging, but hardly original. The action sequences are better than most movies provide and the characters are, for the most part, believable. The direction is heavily stylized and often jerks about in a way that, while initially interesting, quickly wears on the viewer. I would suggest renting this one for a good movie night, but it’s not likely something you’ll need for your movie collection.
