Heavy-handed doesn't even begin to describe Aronofsky's "mother!", a course allegory about God, nature, and the persistent madness of humanity. What begins as a taut, claustrophobic thriller transforms into a disorderly, overindulgent mess in the third act. Jennifer Lawrence is the sole bright spot, even if she primarily generates pity for what the male creative forces behind "mother!" put her through. I'm again impressed by Lawrence's commitment to her role, too bad it's in service of such a poor film.
