  • WHAT I LIKED: What's definitely most appealing about Marvel's 'Ant-Man,' is the high-concept creativity of its main growing and shrinking idea, as that unlocks the opportunity for some brilliantly charming set-pieces and some extremely effective comedic moments. Yes when watching this it becomes very clear what partly drew the brilliant Edgar Wright to it initially as that central power is an extremely versatile one that has never really been explored in cinema before and opens up a whole new world of opportunities. The film that Peyton Reed then took over does definitely explore those things to their full potential as we get a truly original fight on a children's train set, comedic reactions from friends, and some truly badass moments overall. Then of course all of that is baked into a vague and engaging Marvel movie formula where our hero earns his shot at redemption, and when you couple that with some really nice visuals, an excellent soundtrack and some very appropriate performances, what you get is a fun summer movie with some brilliantly original charm.

WHAT I LIKED: The only thing is that the plot is extremely basic, as this is effectively a heist movie where the heist lacks a single surprising twist or turn. That may not be such a problem if the plot was very much a part of the hero's central journey, but in a way the two serve as separate entities where any redemptive moments feel slightly forced and the third act feels naggingly obligatory.

VERDICT: A fun little Marvel movie with some genuine creative charm, 'Ant-Man,' is great, but it does leave much to be desired in the story department.
