  • WHAT I LIKED: Beyond all else, 'The Red Turtle,' is a beautiful display of the sheer power of a moving picture, as this is a film that harks back to the silent age of cinema and goes to show how simple imagery can evoke the strongest of emotional responses. Indeed more so than virtually any film I can remember seeing, this brilliantly delicate piece of work translates the power and beauty of nature in an incredibly raw and authentic way that makes you feel as though you're there with the characters you're connecting with on screen. This is thanks in part to brilliant sound design and beautiful animation, but also the delicate direction that brings intense focus to building atmosphere and mood - and consequently theme - with the lightest of steps.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: This delicate approach does occasionally make some of the story's bolder turns a little hard to take.
VERDICT: An unusually delicate and beautiful film that captures the pure magic of cinema and uses it to evoke the magic of nature; 'The Red Turtle,' really is a brilliant piece of work, and a definite must-see for all.
