  • WHAT I LIKED: 'In Bruges,' is genuinely one of the best-written comedies put to film in a long time as Martin McDonagh crafts a script full of intelligent witt that earns even the most offensive of jokes with its hilarity. Seriously, it's rare that a film nails comedy in this kind of quiet and reserved way with a premise that's so outrageous, but the delivery of the madness here is so dry and well-timed that you'll be left giggling profusely and smiling just thinking about the events that unfold. Of course none of that would be possible without the comedic brilliance of Colin Firth, Bredan Gleeson and Ralph Feinnes, as their individual performances and the way they play off each other is golden. Match that with the dealing of some genuinely serious and occasionally moving themes (made possible by the delivery of the comedy) and what you get is a film that truly puts writer/director Martin McDonagh and makes for one of the best comedies of the decade.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Despite its impressive shoes, it may even be a little too crude for itself in places...
VERDICT: A smart, hilarious, and occasionally affecting dark comedy, 'In Bruges,' is a brilliantly-written film that gets everyone excited to see what Martin McDonagh has got in store next.
