  • WHAT I LIKED: 'The Beach,' sees Danny Boyle return with another very Danny Boyle film, and in many ways you know exactly the kind of thing you're getting here - a frantic and stylish film about the consequences of reckless actions. This time it's Leonardo DiCaprio finding paradise, and what this particular concept does best is to bring it all back down to earth with some grounded ideas about happiness and utopia which are largely translated well by DiCaprio who brings a lot of relateable humanity to the whole experience.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: As the utopic illusion unravells, so does the film's handle on it all, and by the end it has to be said that this thing loses most of its engaging relatability and meaningful intelligence, and instead winds up feeling rather irritating and poorly executed.
VERDICT: A film that starts out well but loses itself as it develops, 'The Beach,' is another very Danny Boyle film from this director, but it's definitely not up there with his best.
