  • WHAT I LIKED: Like many of his subsequent projects, the entirety of Danny Boyle's 'Shallow Grave' drives for the darkest possible humour in satirically exploring the consequences of reckless actions, and what's always surprising is that the humour often lands. Yes in this film, that's particularly the case in the slightly-more-subtle first half where great performances from this stellar crew shine through far more strongly and the great direction pays off best, and in the end all of that definitely points at a unique style and a whole lot of potential.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Unfortunately here though the recklessness of the central characters comes across as irritating rather than amusing as the satiricalism is dealt without anything serious to back it up. This means you're left thinking that things have gone a bit too far as it goes on because everything spirals out of control, even though very little actually occurs to get you invested.
VERDICT: There's no doubt that Boyle is an interesting and thoroughly able film-maker, but 'Shallow Grave,' is arguably just a little too silly to work.
