The Witch is a film by Robert Eggers about a family in the 1630’s that chooses to leave their Plantation (over religious differences) and live on their own near a dark forest. Many have labeled the film as a horror film, but I don't really agree with this label and would classify it more as a Mystery / Suspense film. The best parts of the film for me were the cinematography and the incredibly suspenseful score. The acting was good but I found the mix of 1600’s old English and the heavy accents extremely hard to understand. About 15 minutes in, I decided to turn on the subtitles. My biggest issue with the film was the ending (NO SPOILERS). The movie builds up in an extremely suspenseful way to an ending that seemed rushed. I would have loved to have seen more of the last 5-10 minutes of the film. Overall, I enjoyed the film and I would like to revisit the film again, but I don't think it falls in my re-watch often bucket. I give The Witch a 6/10.
