The Cat Returns is a lovely family film where our protagonist Haru comes of age via the help of some magical cats.

The film appears boundlessly fun and innocent and is undoubtedly funny. However, there is a potential for darkness, especially in the cat kingdom. It is hinted at, particularly in the army cats, executioner cats and the mad king who is very forceful.
However, the message of the film is universal: to trust in oneself. The word 'cool' comes up a lot, with it gradually becoming meaningless (in a good way).
While the film does fall victim to a weak script in places, I did watch the dubbed version where translation can be difficult. Don't blame me purists, blame my family.
The film also has those very anime moments where a character will splurge their emotions, much like Anderson's films but with the emotions dialed up to one hundred.
This is a film for everyone to enjoy. Like any good family film, everyone can enjoy and find something in this film; even if it is just the wonderful art.
