I had the chance to see The Purge: Election Year at a 10:30 showing and man was I entertained. Don’t get me wrong, Election Year isn't a perfect film and has many flaws, but they are easy to ignore when the movie they are in is so much fun! Frank Grillo is great as Leo Barnes. There isn't as much to his character as there was in Anarchy, but he suits the badass role. Elizabeth Mitchell is good as Senator Charlie Roan. The only purpose for her character is to give speeches, run around, and make stupid decisions, but that doesn't stop Mitchell from giving a decent performance. I also loved Mykelti Williams’, (Bubba from Forrest Gump) in this movie. Depending on who you are, you will either love or hate the over the top performances from the actors who play the purgers, but thats what made the movie for me. And it makes it all the more satisfying when they all get blown away. Theres something about someone in a bear suit getting shot in the head that makes me laugh. The film isn't all great though. Election Year tries to tie into the political events happening present day, while it doesn't fail per se, it doesnt really succeed either. And the dialogue spewed out by the characters is laughably campy. In conclusion, The Purge: Election Year is an entertaining B-Movie type. If you enjoyed its prequel, The Purge: Anarchy, you will like this film. Rating: 7/10
