This movie left me feeling ambivalent. The performances were spectacular and it's easy to see why Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell won Academy Awards.

The reason for my ambivalence is because of how the characters interacted with each other. On the whole, many of them were terrible people. That's not to say that every single one of the characters was a bad person - because Peter Dinklage, Caleb Landry Jones, Samara Weaving, and to some extent Woody Harrelson's characters all displayed some great qualities.

I think the character of Penelope summed it up best with "anger begets anger." That is truly an underlying theme throughout the film. Probably one of the most redeeming parts occurs within Sam Rockwell's character of Jason Dixon. The change that happens really stood out to me. While he still retained some of his off-putting qualities, you can definitely see a change in him, that changes the trajectory of the character.

Despite the heavy story, I found myself laughing out loud to some parts...and then questioning myself if I should be laughing and what that ultimately said about me.

'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' is well made and intriguing, but not something I'd repeatedly watch. I'm glad I experienced it, especially because of the performances.
