  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' harkens back to the adventure movies of years past, and like many of those, it serves entirely as decent, fluffy, cinema entertainment. Yes with plenty of fun obstacle courses, a narrative filled with mumbo jumbo, a catchy theme, and - most of all - a well-portrayed character with a plucky attitude at the centre, you could do a whole lost worse to while away a couple of hours. That's also the case because Spielberg further showcases his ability to execute spectacle here (arguably more so than in his previous, more serious movies) and that is significant to some extent.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's nothing more than fluffy entrainment, and depending on your willingness to stay with things, that can test your patience when there's nothing - in fact, barely a shred of proper character development - to seriously keep you engaged.
VERDICT: Whist I disagree with many who regard this movie as one of the greats, I do think 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' is reasonably entertaining, and it does showcase Spielberg's ability to do spectacle and fun. It's all just a bit weightless.
