Ex Machina is an icon of small budget filmmaking in the 21st Century, showing that an immense pile of money isn't needed to make a film that is highly effective. Ex Machina addresses Bladerunner philosophy about artificial life while almost surpassing what Bladerunner couldn't do; that is, make a genuinely shocking storyline.

Garland shows an affinity for thought-provoking science fiction and colourful, high contrast cinematography (cemented in his recent FX series DEVS), creating an aura of unease throughout the film. No character is perfect, the set is sparse and cold and a particular dancing scene set to 80s disco sends shivers down my spine. Ex Machina is an intelligent science-fiction which is accessible for all.
