First Man's brilliance is deeply rooted in Damien Chazelle's empirical genius behind the camera, and Gosling's relationship with the nuances of his character's clandestine struggles. The technological prowess First Man displays is one of intellectualism, portraying a phenomenon as vastly engaging as the moon landing in an intimate and starkly artistic light. The nature of Neil Armstrong's character is such that his feelings are mostly reserved and his emotions are sparsely displayed, but Ryan Gosling manages to show the pain underneath the man and the heaviness of the task on his shoulders. Claire Foy however IS the strength of this movie and is our emotional connection; this allows us to purge our reactions as she does, emoting our frustrations on Neil's calm demeanor while she does the same. Chazelle's directors touch comes in the perfect length of scenes, the immaculate cohesion of sound design, cinematography and mise en scene, and his uncanny ability to tell every story like he's told it a million times. First Man is an intimate masterpiece with astounding visual effects and Oscar worthy performances and direction; as one of my my most anticipated features of the year, I was most definitely not disappointed.
