  • WHAT I LIKED: Many went into 'Finding Dory,' with a great sense of trepidation to see whether this sequel to one of animated films' modern classics would work as well as the first, and frankly they needn't have worried. Yes with Pixar at the helm, this is a real gem that takes the funny forgetful side-character of the original and gives her a thoroughly viable arc all of her own with some beautiful messages about the value of memory and the tragedy of losing it, and the ways we can all approach and appreciate our everyday lifes. It does this of course by sending Dory on an adventure to find her family, and though that may sound fairly basic and much like the first film's plot in many respects, it's what it unlocks in terms of its deep-water thematic development and character relationships that makes it so great. Couple that with Pixar's usual amusing comedy and charm, and what you get is another brilliant film from Pixar that works just as well as the first. Let's not forget, that really is saying something, but it's certainly no surprise either.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Its emotional pull may vary person-to-person depending on their experiences with people with memory loss, and the animation isn't as dazzling and all-consuming as the first either.
VERDICT: An entirely viable and thoroughly brilliant sequel from Pixar that brilliantly tackles some deeper themes, the joy of 'Finding Dory,' shouldn't come as a surprise from this studio, but it is certainly a relief regardless of that.
