This movie made me so happy. It’s obviously not the most conventional of sorts, but with the current leader of SNL digital shorts leading the team, what else can you expect? It also may seem like a distant cousin of Frank (2014), but this movie is so optimistic it soars above and beyond a man with a bear head upon his own.
Brigsby Bear is an early 2017 movie written by and starring Kyle Mooney, about a man, who, after facing -quite a devastating epiphany- about his life, seeks to finish the TV show made especially for him. The movie takes a wayyyy different course than the synopsis suggests at the beginning, but I do not want to spoil any of that fun for the watcher. Besides Mooney, the film stars recognizable faces like Greg Kinnear, Claire Danes, Andy Samberg, and even Mark freaking Hamill- who should be in way more quirky comedies like this. There is a dark aura around the actual reason for making the movie, but my god, it is so easy to ignore that when all the characters are so incredibly nice and positive! Mooney delivers a standout first feature Project, and while his dry humor remains the same with SNL as in the film, it’s so innocent and hopeful that one can’t help but to be inspired by the efforts of this up-and-coming indie movie auteur. The script is sweet and clean, and is perfectly original while still tying in familiar elements to ground it a bit. It’s only a 90 minute film, so it doesn’t drag by wallowing in self-pity; Brigsby Bear just tells a charming story with a heartfelt conclusion. It’s just so sweet guys you gotta watch it
