I am an absolute sucker for Richard Linklater! ‘Before Sunrise’ is one of my favourite films. Linklater is a master of time- questioning his audience constantly about the importance of mortality and how time and change are intertwined.
‘Boyhood’ does this too. Filmed over 12 years on 35mm film it is one of those rare almost completely perfect films. Linklater approaches and subverts the normalities of American society. Critiquing conservatism and praising liberalism. Whether that is in his approach to parenting and masculinity or politics. Linklater masterfully approaches the big questions about life aligning the audience with not just Mason but Olivia and Mason Snr too! He said himself the film could easily be titled ‘Parenthood’ instead.
It is simply one of those films I could watch again and again!
However I think anyone whose seen it can agree the scene where the guy who went to school because of Olivia ruined the tone of naturalism.
Apart from that, this film gives a beautifully real insight into growing up in 2000s America.
