  A visual treat from one of the most innovative directors of this century. The characters are menacing, endearing, and powerful. The narrative is timeless, intriguing, and masterfully crafted. Unfortunately there is a fair bit of nonsense in the film, whether it be visual noise, or unneeded characters and relationships; nonetheless, the Desolation of Smaug is a landmark in Motion Capture technology application, and a worthy addition to the filmography of legendary filmmaker Peter Jackson.
