Jackie is haunting. Much of the film consists of wide shots of Jackie floating down the empty halls of what was once her home. Portman's ghostly portrayal is boosted by Mica Levi's gracefully brooding score which moans and sings along with her pain.

Pablo Larrain uses a mixture of footage from the 60s and his own footage by having very soft lighting and spilling film grain over every shot. This gives the film the feeling of a memory, played on further by the film's flexible narrative. Jackie delves into a dark pit of grief finding all the horrors of loss inside but, helmed by a wonderful as ever John Hurt, reminds us that there is never a good reason to give up hope.
