  For a big-budget summer flick, Hellboy disappoints on every level. It's bland, banal, unadventurous, and cheap. The writers were clearly going for a Deadpool boyish humour but failed to realise that that doesn't mean shoving the F-word into every phrase imaginable. Meanwhile, the plot is completely nonsensical and absolutely cufuddled. You know a plot is in trouble when Arthurian legend is only part of a Tolkien-esque farce.
  
  Yet, surprisingly, the element which bothered me the most was how cheap the film looked. I know it's budget wasn't Star Wars level but many of the blood effects and CGI characters were prequel level poor. Now, if the film had had some charm, perhaps this could've been overlooked. But, because this blockbuster is such a bust, the cheap effects are the final stake in this cinematic vampire.
