Fences serves as a great example of how to adapt plays to films, and also one of the standout films of last year. The cinematography and direction the film takes greatly reflects a play, however instead of hindering the movie, it only adds to the depth and the intimacy of the characters on screen. In addition, there's great performances in this film all round, and in particular from Denzel Washington and Viola Davis which earned them both worthy Oscar nominations. The film's themes and characters make this an ideal movie to study in any film class. At its core, the film deals with many relatable and troubling issues such as infidelity, poverty and racism in realistic and sympathetic ways. There are few complaints to be had with this film, and it truly is well worth a watch.
