WHAT I LIKED: 'Fences' is, without doubt, one of my favourite films of 2017, as it packs more raw, emotional weight and sheer, gut-punching gravitas than virtually anything I've seen all year. Now agreeably it's not the most 'cinematic' production out there, but for me the fact it leans so heavily into its roots as a play only adds to the raw authenticity and unrelenting emotion that bleeds from the wonderful script and these incredible performances. Indeed 'Fences' and its raw power and beautifully-built characters was able to affect me in such an intimate way - far more even than the exceedingly graceful 'Moonlight' - and make for one of the most emotional film experiences I've had in years. I cried as much as I smiled and I was completely involved and invested in the story, and in the end the gritty authenticity of everything on display made for what I believe to be one hugely underrated and affecting film that's up there with some of the best I've seen.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I can see some people's issues with it, but for me the lack of cinematic elements make it all the more affecting and intimate.
VERDICT: One of the most engaging and powerful films of recent years, 'Fences' and its raw, stripped-back approach makes it a very affecting piece of work indeed.
