This epic saga of Malcolm X, from slick street rat to an influential figure in debates around racism and equality, is pumped full of Spike Lee style. Seeing Denzel Washington and Spike Lee in the most dapper of all suits strut down the streets of Harlem is such a joy. But, to then have this image crushed by an undeniable truth is a journey that the audience takes with Malcolm. The film is ripe with rage, helped immensely by Spike Lee's use of historical footage.
