  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' marks writer Shane Black's directorial debut in a neo-noir buddy-cop spoof, and when you think about it even if this idea seemed somewhat risky at the time, this guy really is a natural fit for it as his usual approach, fourth-wall breaking and slap-it-round-your-face attitude is thoroughly amusing and has been put to similar genre fares before. The result here then is indeed rather amusing, and the way Black's snappy dialogue flows through the surprisingly comedic chops of Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer adds rather brilliantly to the whole thing. In the end then you may not have yourself the most profound watch of the year, but you do have one pretty fun movie that puts director Shane Black on the map.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It sadly lacks anything hugely stand-out or emotionally engaging, and the whole thing does become a little tiring - oh, and genuinely incomprehensible - by the end.
VERDICT: A pretty good first directorial attempt from Shane Black; 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' unsurprisingly has a funny script, but it doesn't have a whole lot else to offer.
