  • WHAT I LIKED: There's simply no denying that James DeMonaco's 'The Purge,' has a pretty genius concept at its centre, as the idea of one night of murder and the purging of whoever society pleases is both an interesting thematic idea as well as a rather frightening one. This first film aims to play on both of those factors by following a well-off family in their house on purge night who let in a homeless man and are then threatened with death unless they release him to a group aiming to purge the 'scum' of society. This does indeed make for some scary moments and the odd sprinkling of thematic discussion, but really it's the possibilities of the concept itself that will have you thinking (and gripping your armrests) most of all.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The execution itself does leave a little to be desired as the characters are hugely clichéd and the whole thing becomes gradually less grounded until the rather repetitive third act.
VERDICT: A genuinely genius and terrifying concept executed averagely, 'The Purge,' is always engaging, but agreeably not hugely profound or scary.
