At first look, Southpaw appears to be about the boxing lifestyle, but after watching it, I feel the real crux of the story is love and family. I enjoyed the story and the amount of emotion that comes across as you watch the film. I wish they hadn't shown Rachel McAdams death in the trailer, but I understand why they did. The boxing scenes are incredibly real and brutal. When you watch Jake Gyllenhaal in the ring, you feel his pain and how each hit he takes is affecting him as a person.

The performances are excellent all around, especially with Jake Gyllenhaal (Billy Hope) and Oona Laurence (Leila Hope, Billy's daughter). They had great chemistry together and played off each other extremely well. I also want to mention the excellent soundtrack. With Eminem executive producing the music for this film, it is no surprise that the soundtrack is very emotional and fits the story beautifully. I give Southpaw an 8 out of 10.
