  • WHAT I LIKED: Really all that keeps you locked into 'Gangster Squad' is its incredible cast, as virtually all of these huge stars bring their A-games and show that you do often get what you pay for when it comes to star-power. On that note, it is worth mentioning that other things Warner Bros have forked out for also seem to include over three hundred classic cars to blow up, the destruction of a small city and about a thousand men's lifes, which does also at least provide a nice popcorn-y backdrop for the cast in allowing the occasional action stuff to capture the eye with its historical style.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Unfortunately though, underneath all of that, 'Gangster Squad' has a script that hugely lets it down as it sloppily chugs through the motions of its tasks without revelling in anything that feels meaningful, or even particularly tense or entertaining. That's a big problem as it destroys not only any serious engagement one might be able to unlock, but also any charm that could have been present either.
VERDICT: It's nothing too bad, but unfortunately a great cast and a bunch of sexy style just isn't quite enough to push 'Gangster Squad' and its script out of generic action-movie territory.
