At the end of his vengeance trilogy, director Park ticks all the vengeance boxes the two precursor's have established. Alongside this, we have Park's flashy style which sweeps over scenes of mass violence, landing on a fierce close-up. However, Lady Vengeance fails to push the boundaries of Park's exploration of revenge anywhere; the story is comfortably simple. When put next to Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lee Geum-ja's (Lee Young-ae) predicament is child's play. This then morphs the gritty horror into something more grotesque rather than heartbreaking. For me, the vengeance trilogy has never been about shocking the audience or the brutal violence. The soul-crushing moments of agony are what make it brilliant, which is why Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance holds the top spot for me. This film has that in places, particularly in its third act, but overall my sympathy for Lady Vengeance never came about.
