WHAT I LIKED: 'The Theory of Everything,' is a spellbinding true story of the triumph of one incredible man, and what makes it so affecting and amazing is not only the way that Eddie Redmayne so brilliantly brings Steven Hawking to life, but also the real tale and the themes that are born from this man's breathtaking journey. Yes it could be argued that this is mostly a performances movie where the impact and engagement all comes from Redmayne and his co-star Felicity Jones, but whilst they do both certainly deliver some of the best and most captivating performances of recent years, there's a whole lot more to this film than that. Indeed director James Marsh and writer Anthony McCarten manage to portray this inspiring story in a way that brilliantly delves into the humanity of this man and his family to make for an uplifting and truly tragic character piece on the one hand. On the other hand though, this is then used to beautifully transcend some really powerful messages about love, life and time in brilliantly emotional and cinematic ways that embrace the scientific elements of Hawking's theories whilst giving them an emotional significance that any audience member will take home with them. In the end this means this is a truly powerful and very human piece of drama that uses the incredible people in it to speak to every audience member in a way that will have them sobbing, smiling and truly shaken by the end. This is one of those films that affects me to my core, and it's undoubtedly one of my all-time favourites as a result
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Nothing. This truly is a work of brilliance.
VERDICT: A truly special piece of drama about one incredible man that speaks to us all, 'The Theory of Everything,' is one of my all-time favourites, and I for one think it's massively underappreciated as a film.
