Got around to watching Jeff Nichol's MIDNIGHT SPECIAL and I have to say that if you're a fan of sci-fi, great writing and acting, then this one is for you.

Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, and Joel Edgerton star in this sci-fi drama about a father (Shannon) attempting to get his son, with help (Edgerton), to a destination that will not be revealed until the end. The boy, wonderfully played by Jaeden Lieberher, possesses special powers and therefore makes him wanted by both a cult and the government.

Now I will say that this isn't your typical action-packed sci-fi flick (even though it does have the necessary amount of action). Its more of a drama. The pacing will seem a bit slow to some but I think it serves the film well. It takes it time to set up the characters and does a great job at keeping the viewer wondering what is so "special" about this boy. You'll get hints about what makes the boy special as he reveals his gift to other characters. I think the pay-off is well worth the wait.

I was able to rent this at my local Redbox so I'm sure you'll have easy access to it as well.

    MIDNIGHT SPECIAL is highly recommended.
