  • WHAT I LIKED: It may not quite have the gritty substance behind it that 'Trainspotting,' did, but Danny Boyle's 'A Life Less Ordinary' is thoroughly underrated as it's constantly viewed as a step down from his previous film. In fact though, it's a pretty brilliant one in itself as Boyle returns with all of his snappy style and fascination with the unhinged and reckless in what is effectively a hilarious satire of the romantic comedy. Yes whilst he packs this thing with a brilliantly novel and engaging central plot that explores the extremes of characters' plausible actions alongside plenty of creative editing and a great soundtrack, he manages to do a bit of a one-eighty on the genre with some themes that are dealt rather frankly and a whole lot of whit and self-awareness. In the end it all makes for a generally investing and extremely appealing experience where Boyle excels himself yet again with a mad and enjoyable movie that continues in his usual vain.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It does indeed lack the grit of his previous work, and as we saw with 'Shallow Grave,' the danger of Boyle's fascinations without much serious grounding is that they can occasionally make for rather incoherent and irritating watching.
VERDICT: Another smart and funny film from Danny Boyle that explores a bit of serious stuff in his usual way, 'A Life Less Ordinary,' could do with a little more grounding, but its madness sure is appealing.
