Eighth Grade is an incredibly earnest and VERY current exploration of the perennial transition from child to teenager. Elsie Fisher's brutally honest depiction of an awkward teen with confidence only in front of a computer screen is just about as real as it gets, and with pitch perfect dialogue and collaborative performances, Bo Burnham manages to get us to feel for this character and this uneasy transition in her life by utilizing brilliant sound design, voice-over, and pure innocence. One scene in particular disturbs to the core, not because of its absurdity, but purely because of how effectively its familiarity can be used, and how saddening and confusing it could be for someone at that point in their life. Eighth Grade may not be perfect, but it might just be the most detailed and nuanced exploration of the early teen condition in forever.
