  • WHAT I LIKED: Ben Wheatley set out to make a film that brings a tangibility to action, and he definitely succeeds there as 'Free Fire,' is a film where every hit - and crucially, every miss - has real impact. Yes rather than pack this shoot-out with polished choreography and clean shots, Wheatley shows us yet more talents as he gives some sense of what an event like this might really be like. This is thanks to great sound design and brilliant performances from this stellar cast as well as some excellent visuals, and when you couple that with the odd drop of typical Wheatley humour, you get a rather engaging and not-so-quietly impressive movie.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Having said that, it really is just a shoot-out that lasts an hour and a half, and even if the long-lasting impact of the film is impressive, no matter how hard any filmmaker could try it's impossible to keep the engagement up to the end.
VERDICT: A raw and funny film from Wheatley that succeeds in what it sets out to do. Its only fault really is that it only sets out to do the same thing the whole time.
