Greta Gerwig’s relationship counterpart Noah Baumbach managed to outdo her this year in terms of best film, but I have heard that there’s quite a bit of dialogue in Marriage Story that Gerwig wrote, and if that’s true, I’m not surprised in the slightest. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson give career best performances in this heart-wrenching love story, about the dissolution of a marriage. Marriage Story is about divorce yes, but more importantly it’s about love, it’s indelibility, and the naturally flawed nature of mankind. Baumbach paints his movie with lush and confidently lengthy scenes where character’s speak their minds, or extricate themselves from emotional chains they’ve been clinging on to for too long, and in the most naturally human way, Baumbach festoons his narrative with the most naturally lavish effusions of artistic expression. The movie comes full circle at the end, and as the magnificent score kicks in, you’re left completely devastated by the journey Baumbach has taken you on with these fully realized, and superbly written characters.
