  • WHAT I LIKED: Unsurprisingly from Thomas Alfredson, 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' isn't your usual kind of modern spy/mystery, as it's a film where most of the intrigue and engagement comes across visually and through slow dialogue and nuanced performances, rather than frantic jump cuts and tense music. Instead, what you've got is a very serious film that takes a lot of time and in a way seems to hark back towards the era in which the film is set in editing at the pace of something from the 50s, rather than 2011. As a result, the world not only consumes you; you're also able to marvel at the technical brilliance of what you're seeing and become entranced by the excellent performances and the sparse and perfectly-placed dialogue and direction.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: There's no denying it, the plot is very complicated, and with the pace this slow you feel as though the film is longing you to be in the know without necessarily making itself clear enough in that department.
VERDICT: A wonderfully entrancing and brilliantly made spy film that strays far from the usual genre-crop, 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' is very engaging, if very taxing in the plot department.
