While, at first, The Birds is goofy (yes I find youths being assailed by seagulls humorous, sue me) Hitchcok asks us to trust him, to keep watching. He asks the audience to wait until our characters are t their most vulnerable. And then, much like the avian attackers, he strikes! Claustrophobic, violent, and stressful, The Birds cash in all that tension that has been unconsciously building in its audience. Steel beaks and razor-sharp talons rip and tear at skin and eyeballs at any opportune point. While the beginning is weak, and the female characters beg to be released from the shackles of misogny, the film is a cinematic staple of horror.
