A horrific and honest film about the war. This film has Kurosawa at his directorial best with stunning wide shots, incredibly vivid cinematography, effective blocking and ravaging war sequences. The acting of this film is blessed with exquisite performances with particularly noticeable portrayals from Mieko Harada and Tatsuya Nakadai. As great as the directorial and acting perspective of the film is, the story is truly captivating. On the surface, a a Samurai retelling of King Lear describes the horror of wars in an vivid and depressing way. Violence causes more violences and this film illustrates the reality of this and the effect of it all the way from the noblemen to the common man. A truly groundbreaking film.
