  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Beauty and the Beast' is the very epitome of what a Disney movie is to me - a confidently simple yet relentlessly charming film that plays with the happier side of your emotions from start to finish. Yes every time I stick this thing on it brings a smile to my face, a tear to my eye and a cheek to the edge of my seat, and the reason for that is just how confidently it's all delivered. You really are Disney's humble guest, and mostly the beauty of their hospitality comes from the story - a tale of love and tragedy with a message as sweet as the characters that bring it all to life. Every one of them is extremelly well rounded too - voiced brilliantly and animated to perfection; bringing a reality and humanity to even the most outrageous and beautifully absurd. Even during the musical numbers they captivate and engage, and as such this film is the gold standard to which I measure all animation work. Indeed if you can bring the likes of a beast, a candle-stick or a tea-pot to life as well as this, you're onto a winner from the start.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Some of that relentless charm means a few of the tenser moments feel slightly rushed and forced.
VERDICT: One of Disney's best and one of the most delightful films out there; 'Beauty and the Beast' is a real classic... who's remake isn't going to be remotely easy.
