WHAT I LIKED: An epic and brooding follow-up to George Lucas' mysterious and enchanting 'Star Wars,' 'The Empire Strikes Back,' is a film that takes the delicately planted questions of the first film and answers them in bold and surprising ways to make for one of the greatest sequels, and one of my favourite movies of all time. Back in 1980, everyone was of course shocked with its final revelation, but it's not only there where the film takes big unexpected new strides, as its script from Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan also develops the characters and universe, and delves into the concept of the force in thoroughly revealing and interesting ways.

All of this creates a sense of grandeur and amazement that was arguably less present in the original, and that's helped ten-fold by even better effects and beautiful world building where the scope feels bigger and more detached from reality - yet equally grounded with more exploration. All in all this makes for an experience that's thoroughly all-consuming and overwhelming and builds on the work of the original in surprising and impressive ways to truly epic results.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It really is a damn near perfect movie this...

VERDICT: A darker, more epic and brilliantly bold sequel, 'The Empire Strikes Back,' is a surprising improvement on its excellent predecessor, and is one of my favourite films of all time.
